He couldn't quite make it.

Millions of people all over the world stayed up until midnight to bring in the new year on New Year's Eve. It can be very uplifting to optimistically celebrate the coming in of the New Year with cheers and kisses at midnight, but it's no crime if you can't make it to midnight. Some parents of young children are just too tired, or they know the baby or their preschoolers will get up at the crack of dawn no matter what. Some just aren't into deviating from their normal sleep/wake schedule. So it's fine not to stay up if you are not inclined, but it can be fun if you are into it.
Around here, we aren't into big parties, but we had a few legal fireworks and some sparkling grape juice, a fire in the fireplace, games, and Dick Clark's Rockin New Year's Eve show.
Orangeboy was rather excited about staying up late and playing with fire (yes, he likes to play with fire - uh oh.)
His Dad lit a few sparklers with the kids early in the evening and they got all hyped up from the excitement and chilly weather. We settled down for awhile with snacks and a movie and then a boardgame broke out. Orangeboy was into the game, as he usually is if there is a chance of calculating scores and possibly winning. As the time wore on and it looked like his chances of winning were becoming slimmer, he began to talk louder and sound edgier, and complain more. Finally, an argument broke out over scoring and Orangeboy was done. He started to wail and stomped to his room and then decided to put himself to bed.
He had made it until 11:30. That's pretty good, considering that it wasn't more than two or three years ago that he would fall apart around 8:00.

  1. Sh*t. The more I read your blog, the more I realize that I'm an adult female Orangeboy. Orangewoman?

  2. That's great. I love your comments because one day, when the time is right, maybe I'll be able to show Orangeboy that he's not the only one out there!

  3. By the way, I was so impressed by how well you had captured, um, me with your description of O, I read that description to my Hubby. As I went on, his eyebrow kept getting higher and higher, as he recognized me more and more.

I'd like to think I'm better at controlling it than I was as a kid, but I'm not so sure of that.
